‘Why did Christ come?’ --Hebrews 20:5 - 7--

  1. Christ came into the world to establish righteousness for usas a man. He came to restore that which we lost in our sin and fall in Adam. He said, ‘I restored that which I took not away’ (Psalm 69:4). God required righteousness from us, perfect conformity to his holy law. But we are guilty. We have broken God’s law. And we have no ability to live in righteous obedience to God’s law, because we are sinful by nature. But the Lord Jesus Christ came as a man, without sin, to live as our Representative in perfect obedience to the law and will of God. Now by his obedience to God as our Representative, Christ established righteousness before God for his people. And it is written, ‘By the obedience of one shall many be made righteous’ (Romans 5:19).
  2. Christ came to redeem his peopleby dying as our Substitute under the wrath of God.   Christ Jesus was born at Bethlehem as a man, so that he might die at Calvary in the place of sinners, according to the will of God our Father. At the appointed time our Lord was nailed to the cursed tree. God took all the sins of all his people and made them to be his Son’s, so that by divine imputation the Son of God was made to be sin for us.   God’s law and justice found our sins upon Christ and punished him for sin as our Substitute. Since the law of God punished Christ for sin in our place, we are redeemed. All who believe, all God’s elect, are fully pardoned through Christ’s precious blood. ‘Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree’ (Gal. 3:13).
  3. Christ came to glorify his Fatherin the salvation of sinners. Since Christ Jesus lived in righteousness as our Representative and died under the curse of the law as our Substitute, satisfying the righteousness and justice of God for us, God’s glory is revealed in the salvation of his elect. Christ Jesus lived and died for us, so that God could be both just and the justifier of all who believe (Romans 3:24-26).

“There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked” (Isaiah 57:21).

Our Lord plainly states that there is no peace to the wicked. WHO ARE THE WICKED? ALL have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 4:23). “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” (Ecc. 7:20). “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness” (1 John 5:19). WHO ARE THE WICKED? You! Me! ALL of us are in that camp. There’s NO PEACE in the heart of any unregenerate person. How does anyone find peace with God? Trying to gain favor with God by our own polluted works of self-righteousness is not the answer. Being encouraged to make a decision for Jesus by one of the prophets of Baal is not the answer. Holding up your ‘Certificate of Baptism’ is not the answer. “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost: which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour” (Titus 3:5 - 6). Peace with God is found only in Jesus Christ who “is our peace” (Eph. 2:14). God’s eternal love was set on a particular people that He chose in Christ before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:3 - 5). God’s elect were redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. We were reconciled to God by the death of His Son (Rom. 5:9 - 10). In our state of spiritual deadness, we were ignorant of the perfect redeeming work of Christ our Savior. Matter-of-fact, the true Gospel of God’s amazing grace was foolishness to our carnal minds (1 Cor. 2:14). But in His own appointed time, our Great Sovereign Merciful God brought us under the preaching of His Gospel. And, in the Person of the Holy Spirit, He “came and preached PEACE” to us (Eph. 2:17). When we heard that Christ our Savior, by Himself, purged our sins from God’s sight forever (Heb. 1:3; 10:10 - 17), peace which passeth all understanding (Phil. 4:7) flooded our soul, filling our heart with joy unspeakable and full of glory. The zeal of the LORD of hosts, Jesus Christ The Prince of Peace, who is seated in the heavens on the throne of David, is the One who performs this miracle of The New Birth. And the enlightened minds that are fixed on Jesus Christ will be kept IN PERFECT PEACE (Isaiah 26:3), giving our Great Triune God all the glory for all eternity.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

CHRIST IS LORD

“The Lord Jesus Christ, because of His Godhead, has always had rule over the universe. Yet in His incarnation, God the Father bestowed or conferred on Him, (His Son, the office of King (Luke 1:32; Psalm 2:6). His office as King, or His Lordship, is what every believer bows to first, His right to rule over them. So His kingship commences in the hearts and lives of those who truly bow to and come by faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. After His resurrection, the Father turned over the reigns of this universe and all that is in it, to His Son, to dispose of, to govern, to reign over till all His enemies are made His footstool and the last enemy is destroyed (1 Corinthians 15:25 - 27; Matthew 28:18).”

No One Can Preach A Better Gospel

“A preacher of old once said, ‘I know that however many may preach the Gospel better than I do, there is no one who can preach a better Gospel than the one I preach: for I preach the Gospel of God's free and sovereign grace in Christ Jesus.’

How true! Our Gospel is the ‘power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.’ Our Gospel gives all the glory to God, for ‘Salvation is of the Lord.’ Our Gospel is true to the Scriptures, fulfilling every promise, pattern and type. Our Gospel enables God to be just and justifier of sinners. Our Gospel can save the ‘chief of sinners’, and our Gospel will not lose one sheep given to Christ, called to Christ, and resting in Christ by faith. What a rich and glorious Gospel is our Gospel!”

“Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are YOU in mine hand” (Jer. 18: I - 6; Is. 64:8; Rom. 9:21).

“Let those who will, argue about the ‘extent’ of God’s sovereignty or the ‘degree’ of man’s ability, but not with me. I’ve been to the ‘potter’s house.’ They’re merely discussing a DOCTRINE, but I am talking about REALITY!   Leave me alone, you who have a ‘form of godliness but deny the power thereof’ (II Timothy 3:5; II Peter 2:1; Jude 3, 4). For one to deny the absolute sovereignty of God is no less than a denial of the existence of One who is God!”

Pastor Maurice Montgomery

"Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him" (Isaiah 3:10).

“In spiritual things all your temptations, all your darkness, all your wanderings God will overrule. It shall be well with you. There shall never be a night, but that morning shall come; there shall never be a day of trouble, but a day of prosperity shall follow; there shall never be an emptying, but there shall be a filling; there shall never be a bringing down, but that He will raise you up again. Let it be either darkness or light, sorrow or grief, night or day, life or death, time or eternity, ‘It shall be well with the righteous’.

HE GIVETH HIS LIFE FOR THE SHEEP (John 10: 1).

“Jesus Christ appeared in this world as a representative and substitute of a people given to Him by the Father before the world began. Both His life and His death were vicarious. (Vicarious according to the dictionary means something performed or endured by one person substituting for another or appearing in the place of another.)

In Romans 8: 33 it says, ‘who shall lay anything to the charge of Gods elect? It is God that justifieth.’   All of Gods elect have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. (see Ephesians 1: 3-7) To view the death of Christ in any other way is to view His death as a vain attempt by an impotent god, who sacrificed his son for nothing. To view His death in any other way destroys the wisdom of God, violates the justice of God, and turns the love of God into a mere passion.

Christ died for our sins according to the scripture, and according to the scriptures His death was vicarious.”

Pastor Darvin Pruitt

“In Heaven, believers will be able to do perfectly that which Paul determined to do on this earth. Know nothing save Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”

Pastor Chris Cunningham

*       *       *       *       *       *       *

“If God is sovereign, and He is (Daniel 4:35); if we are begotten of God according to His own will, and we are (James 1:18); if the New Birth is not a result of the will of man, and it most certainly is not (John 1:18); then what is being preached from most pulpits is not from God. Brethren, listen to the message that is being preached and if it contradicts God’s Word, COME AWAY FROM IT! Irreverence to the inspired Word of God breeds irreverence to God Himself.”

If a man is trusting in anything he has done to merit favor with God, including his own free will, he does not believe that Jesus Christ is his Savior. We either believe that Jesus Christ by Himself purged our sins (Heb. 1:3), OR WE DON’T!
