ROMANS 9:31-33

But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

WELCOME TO RESCUE BAPTIST CHURCH

“Sinners are welcome at this church. We are a local body of the Lord Jesus Christ. As you spend time with us, you’ll soon discover we’re an imperfect church, with an imperfect pastor, yet by God’s undeserved grace, we preach, believe, and know the perfect gospel of our never-failing Lord Jesus Christ. We call His name Jesus for He shall, (not might, not maybe) but shall save His people from their sins, and every sinner that trusts in Christ is complete in Him, saved to the uttermost” HEBREWS 7:25                                                                         (copied)

“... Because of Adam’s disobedience, we inherited all his sinful traits.  Even so, by the obedience of one, Jesus Christ, we see the WONDERFUL, EFFECTUAL, results of His obedience.  ‘Many shall be made righteous.’  Here is a glorious truth that also thunders through the Scriptures.  ‘Grace hath reigned through righteousness unto eternal life.’  We have absolutely nothing to do with becoming righteous.  Our righteousness was totally earned by our Mediator, Jesus Christ, and freely and sovereignly imputed to us by His grace (Romans 4:6 - 8).”

“... If the possession of heaven could be obtained with only a single act of goodness; never to all eternity should I find it.  ‘When I would do good, evil is present with me.’  Oh! then for grace to know thee, to love thee, to follow thee, as my only good; my hope, my righteousness, my portion forever!  Amen.”

ANNOUNCEMENT

·        Friday Night Bible Study to resume November 19, 2021

Throughout His Holy Word, God makes it abundantly clear that He is Sovereign; that He rules and reigns over absolutely everything!  We read these words in Daniel 4:35, words that CANNOT be misunderstood by anyone who reads them: “.. all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he (God) doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?”  The unregenerate, ungodly, Christ hating people of this world, including all works religionists, don’t tremble at this God-honoring truth - THE LORD REIGNETH!  There’s no fear of God before their eyes.  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.  THEREFORE, they have no spiritual wisdom.

The writers of the New Testament were moved by God the Holy Spirit to declare that Jesus Christ is the same Sovereign God we read about in the Old Testament.  “ALL POWER” in heaven and earth has been given to Jesus Christ the God-man (Matthew 28:18).  He, Jesus Christ, upholds “ALL THINGS by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3).  Speaking of the Son of God, who was to be born of the virgin, Isaiah said: “.. the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).  To say that the government is not upon the shoulder of the exalted Christ of God is to say that the Lord Jesus does not reign.  Jesus Christ is Jehovah, The Mighty God!  To say that He is not The Supreme Governor who is in sovereign control of all things is to say that He is not God.  THAT’S THE SPIRIT OF ANTI-CHRIST!

Brethren, Jesus Christ is not only our Blessed Redeemer who was delivered for our offences.  He is also our Sovereign Lord who was raised again for our justification.  “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

When I was young, I was sure of many things. But now that I am old, there are only two things which I am sure of: One is that I am a miserable sinner! Secondly, that Christ is an all-sufficient Savior! He is well taught—who learns these two lessons. "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief"   (1 Timothy 1:15)

Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

When a believer has fallen into a low, sad state of feeling he often tries to lift himself out of it by chastening himself with dark and doleful fears. Such isn’t the way to rise from the dust, but to continue in it. As well chain the eagle’s wing to make it mount, as doubt in order to increase our grace. It isn’t the law, but the gospel which saves the seeking soul at first. And it isn’t a legal bondage, but gospel liberty which can restore the fainting believer afterwards. Slavish fear doesn’t bring back the backslider to God, but the sweet wooings of love allure him to Jesus’ bosom. Are you thirsting for the living God, and unhappy because you can’t find him to the delight of your heart? Have you lost the joy of religion, and is this your prayer, Restore unto me the joy of your salvation? Are you conscious also that you are barren, like the dry ground; that you aren’t bringing forth the fruit unto God which he has a right to expect of you; that you are not so useful in the church, or in the world, as your heart desires to be? Then here is exactly the promise which you need, I will poor water upon him that is thirsty. You shall receive the grace you so much require, and you shall have it to the utmost reach of your needs. Water refreshes the thirsty. You shall be refreshed. Your desires shall be gratified. Water quickens sleeping vegetable life. Your life shall be quickened by fresh grace. Water swells the buds and make the fruits ripen You shall have fructifying grace. You shall be made fruitful in the ways of God. Whatever good quality there is in divine grace, you shall receive in plenty. You shall be as it were drenched with it. And as sometimes the meadows become flooded by the bursting rives and the fields are turned into pools, so shall you be The thirsty land shall be springs of water.

ISAIAH 43:1-3

But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

"FOUR WORDS"

(Galatians 3:13) "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us."

When the Lord Jesus Christ hung on that cross, He was made a curse for us – the object of God's wrath and judgment. We who believe will never endure the curse of God's wrath. Being made a curse for us, "Christ hath redeemed us." He did not make our redemption possible, nor did He make us redeemable. "Christ hath redeemed us." The us are those who have looked to Him – believed in Him – trusted Him.

The work of Christ is the theme of Holy Scripture, the foundation of our faith, and the only hope we have of eternal salvation. This is the Good News that we proclaim. We say to every sinner, who will believe, that, "Christ hath redeemed us." The Work is accomplished. It is finished.

I want to give you four words which will help you remember this work of Christ in redemption. They will comfort your heart and fill it with thanksgiving and praise to Him.

The first word is SOVEREIGNTY. Redemption was an act of Divine sovereignty – "He laid down His life for us." There was nothing in us that obligated Him, or moved Him to die for us. He voluntarily laid down His life for us, because it was the free and sovereign pleasure of His love to do so. "The good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep" (John 10:11).

Christ, the sovereign God, determined everything about His death – that He would die, who His murderers would be, when He would die, where He would die, how He would die, for whom He would die, and the results of His death.

The second word is SUCCESS. Because He is the eternal, sovereign God, we are assured that His death and redemptive work is not a failure – "He shall not fail." What He determined to accomplish at Calvary, He accomplished. He completed His mission. He has successfully put away sin, brought in an everlasting righteousness, and redeemed unto Himself a people.

The third word is SUBSTITUTION – He died as the Substitute for a particular people. Those for whom Christ stood as a substitute at Calvary, bearing their sins and enduring the wrath of God in their place, shall never perish. They are redeemed! Their sins have been put away. He who was made sin for us has made us the righteousness of God in Him.

The fourth word is SATISFACTION – His substitutionary sacrifice for our sins has completely and perfectly satisfied the wrath and justice of God that is against us. His sacrifice was infinitely meritorious, so that every sinner who believes on Christ is freely justified and fully pardoned. And now, God looking on the merits of His Son, pardons every sinner who looks on His Son in faith.

Think on these four words – Sovereignty, Success, Substitution, Satisfaction – as they relate to the death of Christ. They will help you remember the death of Christ according to the Scriptures and comfort your soul.
