"His name shall be called Wonderful"

--Isaiah 9:6--

"Never was there a name so wonderful as the name of our Savior. He is the Lord Jesus Christ.  The Lord — our Master, our King, our Sovereign, our God. Jesus — our Savior, our Redeemer, our Deliverer.  Christ —Anointed One.  He was anointed by God as the Prophet, Priest and King of his people.  This is the one whom the Father deemed able to save us and worthy of all glory.  He is wonderful in the estimation of the Father, of the heavenly angels and of all his people.

  1. He is wonderful in his covenant.  In covenant mercy, the Son of God agreed to become our Savior and to accomplish for us a perfect salvation.
  2. He is wonderful in his compassion.  Behold how he loves us! He has loved us with an eternal, sovereign, distinguishing, personal, perfect and infinite love.
  3. He is wonderful in his condescension. In a gigantic step downwards, he took upon himself our nature.  Poverty, pain and persecution followed the Man of sorrows all his days.  As great as the humiliation of the incarnation was, it was nothing in comparison with that humiliation he endured upon the cross as our Substitute!  He bore shame, scourging, scoffing and spitting for us.  At last he was made to be sin for us!  Being slain in our place, he was buried in a borrowed tomb.
  4. He is wonderful in his crowning.  After three days in the grave, the Son of God came forth triumphant over the grave.  Forty days later he ascended to the throne of glory as our Mediator King.  The God-man is crowned with glory and honor, never to be humbled again.  All the universe is under his sovereign rule.
  5. He is wonderful in his care. The Son of God rules all people and all events, working all things together for the good of his people. The Lord of glory is our Protector, Provider and Preserver.
  6. He is wonderful in his coming.  'Behold, he cometh'! Yes, he is coming again!  He is coming now!  Soon the Son of God, our Savior, will again be upon the earth.      All things will be put under his feet!"

"I will be their God, and they shall be my people."

--2 Corinthians 6:16--

"What a sweet title: 'My people!' What a cheering revelation: 'Their God!'  How much of meaning is couched in those two words, 'My people!'  Here is speciality.  The whole world is God's; the heaven, even the heaven of heavens is the Lord's, and he reigneth among the children of men; but of those whom he hath chosen, whom he hath purchased to himself, he saith what he saith not of others--'My people.'  In this word there is the idea of proprietorship. In a special manner the 'Lord's portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.'  All the nations upon earth are his; the whole world is in his power; yet are his people, his chosen, more especially his possession; for he has done more for them than others; he has bought them with his blood; he has brought them nigh to himself; he has set his great heart upon them; he has loved them with an everlasting love, a love which many waters cannot quench, and which the revolutions of time shall never suffice in the least degree to diminish.  Dear friends, can you, by faith, see yourselves in that number?  Can you look up to heaven and say, 'My Lord and my God'; 'mine by that sweet relationship which entitles me to call thee Father; mine by that hallowed fellowship which I delight to hold with thee when thou art pleased to manifest thyself unto me as thou dost not unto the world?'  Canst thou read the Book of Inspiration, and find there the indentures of thy salvation? Canst thou read thy title writ in precious blood?  Canst thou, by humble faith, lay hold of Jesus' garments, and say, 'My Christ?' If thou canst, then God saith of thee, and of others like thee, 'My people'; for, if God be your God, and Christ your Christ, the Lord has a special, peculiar favour to you; you are the object of his choice, accepted in his beloved Son."

--C. H. Spurgeon

Without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6).  Before any hell-deserving sinner can do anything that pleases God, faith, then, must precede any act that man performs.  Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2).  Faith is God's gift to the sinner (Eph. 2:8 - 9).  THEREFORE, the false doctrine of man's so-called free will is a devilish lie fabricated by sinful man with an attempt to rob God of His glory for the salvation of a particular people He chose in Christ before the foundation of the world (Eph. 3:2 - 9).

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The new birth is a miracle of God's amazing grace which He alone can perform (John 3:3).  Under the preaching of His glorious gospel, God sends the Spirit of His Son into the hearts of His chosen, blood-bought children, enlightening the minds of those He delivers from the power of darkness.  He reveals Jesus Christ to His saints as their risen, exalted Lord, who, by the supreme sacrifice of Himself, obtained eternal redemption for them (Heb. 9:12).  Until that miracle is performed, hell-deserving sinners are still dead in trespasses and sins, no matter how zealous they might be in their self-righteous false religious beliefs.

CHRIST, OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST

" Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession"  (Hebrews 4:14).

"If God has shown us that we are, by nature, altogether ruined by our own sin (Rom. 3:10-11; 5:12: 7:18, Eph. 2:13), we will cease working to earn our acceptance with God, and find rest in the shed blood of Christ! (Rom. 4:4-5; 11:5-6, Gal. 3:21-22, Eph. 2:8-9, Heb. 9:13-14)  Our Lord, by himself, purged all of the sins of his chosen people from God's sight forever, by that one offering of himself in our place, so that now we are just in God's sight! (Rom. 4:25; 5:1, 9, Gal. 2:16-17; Heb. 1:3; 10:14).   No one in earth, or in heaven, or in hell, or anywhere else, can lay one sin to our charge, because God himself says that he has removed our sins from us as far as the east is from the west! (Ps. 103:12, Rom. 8:33-34).  Our Great High Priest has finished the work!  (Jn. 17:4; 19:30; Heb. 1:3).  The work has been accepted! (Heb. 10:10, 14).  Our sins are all gone! (1 Jn. 1:7; Rev. 1:5).  And now he intercedes in heaven for us (Heb. 7:25-25) without saying one word!  Those wounds in his hands, and those wounds in his feet, and the wounds in his side – they all testify that the work is all finished!  In God's sight we are justified, and we have been made as righteous as Christ is himself! (2 Cor. 5:21).   If we half-way believed that, our hearts would just burn within us!  And they do, whenever our God is pleased to give us a glimpse into just how fully he has redeemed us from all of our sin!  God help us to see that Christ is enough!  'Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession'."

Michael Smith

When Jesus Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice for the sins of His people, He not only sanctified (made us holy in God's sight), He perfected us (made us perfect in God's sight) (Heb. 10:9 - 10; 14).  So PERFECT that God remembers our sins against us NO MORE! (Heb. 10:16 - 17).  When those glorious gospel truths are revealed to hell-deserving sinners, those enlightened saints give Jesus Christ, their exalted Lord and Saviour, all the glory for their eternal salvation.

"Every religion except one puts you upon doing something in order to recommend yourself to God.  It is only the gospel of Christ which runs counter to all the rest by affirming that we are saved and called with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to the Father's own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ before the world began (not sold out to us on certain conditions to be fulfilled by ourselves).  It was long ago remarked by a good man that, 'It is the business of all false religions to patch up a righteousness in which the sinner is to stand before God'.  But it is the business of the glorious gospel to bring near to us, by the hand of the Holy Spirit, a righteousness ready wrought, a robe of perfection ready made, wherein God's people, to all the purposes of justification and happiness, stand perfect and without fault before His throne!"

"CHRIST IS ALL OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.  In the teeth of all thy sins, believe that He is thy righteousness still!  Thy good works do not improve His righteousness; thy bad works do not stain it.  This is a robe which the best deeds cannot mar.  Thou standest in Him, not in thyself.  Whatever, then, thy doubts and fears may have been, do now, poor troubled, distressed, distracted believer, say again, 'Yea, He is the Lord my righteousness'."

--C. H. Spurgeon

CHRIST'S GREAT WORK

"What is His work?  The work which the Father gave Him to do; the work covenanted from before the world began; the work that shall crown Him with glory and honor for ever and ever; the work of fulfilling, of magnifying, and of honoring the holy law of God; the work of satisfying it and sheathing the sword of inflexible justice in His own heart; the work of vanquishing the powers of darkness, bruising the old serpent's head, spoiling principalities and powers, taking away the sting of death, and removing the curse forever from all the election of grace.  That is the work of God; that is the work of Christ, and it is freely given to the believer."

--Joseph Irons
